ALA this summer in Anaheim–anyone going?
I’m giving serious thought to attending the annual ALA Conference in Anaheim this summer for a variety of reasons:
- I just became a member of ALA and maybe there’s something interesting for me to see/do there?
- As president of FOL for Modesto, there will be some great events to attend.
On behalf of the FOL, I can attend the super-fun-looking Laugh’s On Us program featuring Paula Poundstone, June Casagrande, Dan Kennedy, the excellent Beth Lisick & Robert Schimmel.
Also scheduled are two Friends/Trustees “Best Practices” workshops, from which our group can definitely benefit. As a library school grad student and future info professional, I’m quite excited about the many other programs and sessions available to attendees.

Poetry this afternoon
Sixteen Rivers authors Dan Bellm, Terry Ehret, and Gillian Wegener will be reading from their new collections at the Mistlin Gallery at 4 pm today. As you’ll recall, Gillian read from her work at the Friends of the Modesto Library annual meeting and bowled everyone over with her great poems (and delivery). We’ll see you there!

Used book nirvana
If you enjoy shopping for books as much as I do, make it a point to visit the Friends of the Salida Library used book sale this weekend, at the Salida Library, a branch of our beloved SCFL. In addition to thousands of books, they’ll also be selling magazines, videos and CDs. Sale hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 14 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 15. Call 209-543-7315 for more information.

You & Libraries: a more balanced relationship
Paula Poundstone is working with FOLUSA to promote public libraries. Check out the cool PSA she made, urging folks to join their local Friends of the Library group.

Playing with tunes…
…and trying to get them on this blog. Here’s an experiment to see if it works: Stella’s tunes on Rhapsody.
Nah. Not liking it. Just a plain ol’ link to Rhapsody, and you have to open their player. I want to just embed an object in my blogpost. Further exploration necessary.
Susan Lilly, SCFL PIO, selected Outstanding Woman of 2008
Congratulations to Susan Lilly, public information officer at Stanislaus County Free Library, on being selected one of the Outstanding Women of Stanislaus County 2008. Her strong, steady presence at the library has helped raise its profile in the community. I know she’s certainly been a resource to the Friends in helping with publicity needs and such.
But I found out that Susan also coordinates library outreach for the library’s homebound program, and is extremely active in the community, even helping to bring the Power of the Purse event to our city. Susan deserves a big round of applause.

FOL, poetry, and Funderwoods
My pal Gillian Wegener just had her first full-length poetry collection, The Opposite of Clairvoyance, published by Sixteen Rivers Press.
The other night, G. graciously read from her book at a poetry reading to support the Friends of the Modesto Library. (Thank you Gillian!) The FOML is a group that support and advocates for the Modesto Library, the flagship of the Stanislaus County Free Library system.
Anyway, Gillian started off the reading with one of her signature poems, “Funderwoods.” Well lo and behold! It just so happened there was an audience member Read the rest of this entry »

Great place to hang out…
My family (middle-aged man + woman + 6-year-old) is always visiting the Stanislaus County library for one thing or another. Sometimes we pay our late fines (whoops! Despite email reminders, we remain incorrigible late turner-inners), while other times we’re checking out a great children’s program (see the Schedule of Kid’s Events). One day last summer, the kiddo & I just took pics around the outside. She had fun while I snapped pics. This is one of the images; the rest can be seen on my Flickr page on the Hometown Library collection.
